Tips for Distance Learning

A few weeks ago California announced that schools would be closed for the remaining of the school year. The whole transition from classroom to home schooling is a huge transition for kids (and parents) but it can certainly still be successful.

As a former preschool teacher and working mom, I need to keep a routine going and keeping a consistent schedule for kids learning at home is just as important

First and foremost, stay calm and organized. I like to do a lot of the prep-work for the school day the night before.

Put together a list of tasks for kids to check off as they go

Sit down with your child and write down all of their responsibilities for the day so they know what they need to complete. As soon as Ari finishes a task, she checks it off and knows she’s one step closer to getting her work done for the day. I let Ari pace her self, take breaks if she needs to, etc. Keep the task list on hand and remind your child throughout the day what still needs to be completed.

Pack lunches ahead of time

Packing the kids’ lunches and snacks the night before makes the day go by so much smoother. You don’t need to stop and think what you are going to make the kids for lunch and avoids your kids going through the pantry every 30 minutes for a snack. We use the bento boxes from Pottery Barn, which you can find here.

Organize school work in a backpack

Even though we are staying home and distance learning, I still use the girls backpacks to organize all of their school work and projects. Every night I put together the packets the girls are going to work on the following day and place them in their backpacks. Int he morning, they pull out their work out of their backpack and get working. This helps keeps all the paperwork in one place and reminds children that we are still doing school work, even though we are at home. The girls Disney Moana x Pottery Barn backpacks can be found here.
