How to write a killer pitch

So if there’s one thing I know a thing or two about, it’s writing a killer pitch. After all, I work in PR and I send pitches out for clients all day long. A common misconception a lot of bloggers who are just starting out have is that they are not ready to start partnering up with brands.  But I am here to tell you that it’s never too early to start working with brands! I landed my first partnerships when I had just a little over 1,000 followers so don’t feel like you shouldn’t reach out to certain brands because you don’t have enough followers — you really never know the response you’re going to get and building relationships takes time.

For example, if you have under 5,000 followers, you probably shouldn’t be reaching out to brands with a huge follower base but you can reach out to some small shops who I am sure would be thrilled to work with you. You have to remember it’s not always about how many followers you have, as long as your providing high-quality photos and content, you are already  increasing your chances of getting a yes from a brand.

So what elements are needed in a pitch? I like to keep it sweet, simple and to the point. No one wants to ready a full essay on why you want to work with them but there are some essential pieces of information that you should always provide. I always stick to a similar outline to ensure I get my point across.

There should be 4 elements included in your killer pitch and I’m here to share them with you:

  1. Introduce yourself, briefly mention who you are and why you want to work with a brand. If you already use the brand, mention your favorite products. If it’s something you want to try, mention what you’ve heard and why you’d love to do a review for them.
  2. Mention why the brand would fit well with your audience.
  3. Specify exactly what you will provide– photos, content, is there a price? What platforms will you be posting on? All of these elements should be included in your pitch. You want brands to visualize what you’ll be able to provide so get as specific as possible. For example, if you are working with a swimsuit company, you may want to offer photos at the beach.
  4. Include your social media links and let them know you are open to exploring ideas and chatting further about a possible opportunity

That’s it! These simple elements will help you get noticed and drive your message home. It is important to know that no matter how good your pitch is, it’s not always going to get picked up. You are going to get a lot more no’s then you’ll get yes’s and that’s okay. When it’s a right fit, it will just work. Also make sure you’re only reaching out to brands that fit with your audience. I only work with brands I would purchase from and I feel my followers would genuinely find interesting. I turn down paid gigs quite often because it doesn’t fit with my content and I am totally fine with that. Make sure you focus on cultivating relationships with brands that fit your brand and don’t get too caught up in working with a brand for a free product/extra cash if it doesn’t fit well with who you are. It’s okay to say no sometimes and the right opportunities are out there for you!
