How to save money by cutting cable

It’s been over a year since I cut our cable bill and I’ve convinced a handful of friends and family to do the same. It’s 2020 and if you are still paying a high cable bill, it’s time to drop it.

I cut cable for two reasons.

Reason #1. I felt like my kids were watching too much TV. We’d walk into the house, they would just watch whatever was on Disney Channel and get sucked into a hole until I turned off the TV.

Reason #2. To save money. Cable companies are tricky. They offer you a super sweet deal to get you to sign up and it’s almost hard to pass up. You sign your year contract and then your one year mark comes and BOOM your bill has all of a sudden gone up $80. Yes, their promo deals are great but will all the hidden fees and extras, it can get really pricey.

Danny FREAKED out when I told him I was going to cancel cable. He likes watching his live sporting events so I did research to find something that worked for all of us.

We switched over to Hulu’s premium plan with live TV capabilities. Yup, you can actually watch live TV without cable and it’s pretty amazing. Say you forgot your show was on and you turn on the TV 10 minutes late, you can actually start it from the beginning. You can also record your shows and have an archive of almost episode on network’s most popular TV shows.

We currently have the following:

  • Hulu $60 per month
  • Netflix $3 per month (our T-mobile bill covers the other $10)
  • Disney+ $12
  • Amazon Prime free (free with a Prime subscription, which I am sure you are paying for anyways)

Hulu also has cheaper options if you are looking to do some major cuts- they offer basic plans with ads, and you can ditch the live capabilities to save a ton of money too.

These plans work for our family. I love that I have access to all of our subscriptions on our phones and we bring our Google Chrome when we travel so we can watch all of our favorites during our down-time when staying at hotels.

If you’re looking for a way to cut some spending this year, this is one of the best ways to do it!
