What to do & where to stay in Mission Beach, San Diego

The best part about living in San Diego? We don’t have to drive far to staycation in our city. We all needed a break from everyday life and this past weekend and we booked a little family getaway at the San Diego Mission Bay Resort. We love going to Mission Bay with the kids but it was our first time staying at the resort. We figured the location would make it ideal and we are always game to try something new!

Mission Bay is great for kids because you are able to enjoy a ton of sand and water activities. It pretty much has it all- from a sandy bay, to playgrounds, fire pits, and more. It’s a hot spot among locals and a great place to travel with kids as there’s a ton of activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Mission Bay is located in central San Diego and it’s known for being a go-to for water spots like jet skiing, paddle boarding, etc. Families love it because of the calm water and ease of access to the water/sand and it’s a popular spot for picnics, BBQs and bonfires.

If you want to experience San Diego like the locals do this summer, you’ll want to add Mission Bay to your list of places to visit. You will not be disappointed!

Side note- Fourth of July gets absolutely insane in Mission Bay and if you are planning a trip over the summer time, you’ll want to stay close to the activities and definitely plan ahead.

San Diego Mission Bay Resort is prime location for all of the action of Mission Bay. The entire resort has the most incredible views of the bay and the property has severals gardens and areas for kids to run around and get their energy out at the end of the day. The hotels was recently renovated and we booked a fire pit guest room which was perfect for our family. The room had 2 queen beds, a huge flat screen tv, a couch and sink right near the glass doors that took us right out to our patio with a fire pit. Yup- our own personal fire pit. it was amazing.

The resort offers bundles of fire wood and s’mores kits so you can have your own personal bonfire right outside your room all night long. Our room had a large garden right behind us too so the girls were running around and playing corn hole while Danny and I enjoyed a glass of wine sitting by the fire. It was exactly what we needed.

What we absolutely loved at the resort was the numerous activities they had on the property.

Free activities at the San Diego Mission Bay Resort

  • A family pool with two jacuzzis and a splash pad for little ones
  • Corn hole located in one of the gardens
  • Ping pong tables
  • Jumbo jenga (they pulled it out right at the pool area)
  • Fire pits across the entire property so even if you don’t book a fire pit room, you’ll still be able to access a community fire pit, enjoy s’mores, etc.!

Paid activities at the San Diego Mission Bay Resort

I absolutely loved that the resort had access to rentals on the property. It makes for a convenient way to check out water activities without having to take a drive in the car.

  • Bike rentals. We rented a tandem bike to ride around the bay. Danny and I pedaled while the girls got to enjoy the views. The rental was for an hour but we only made it about 30 minutes before we decided it was time to head back to the pool
  • Jet skiis
  • Kayaaks
  • Stand up paddle boards

When it comes to family travel, we always take into consideration how much we are able to do at the resort. It makes it so much easier when you arrive to a destination, park your car and don’t have to drive anywhere your entire trip.

If you are planning a trip to San Diego with kids and want to get access to gorgeous views and tons of activities, this is your spot!
