Make money selling your kids’ clothes

It seems like spring cleaning has been in full force this winter ever since “Tidying Up” came out on Netflix. It seriously feels like everyone is talking about it. Now what if I told you that you can make some easy cash as you empty out your kids closet? You can definitely use this strategy by doing this to your closet too!

I am the complete opposite of a hoarder and every few months I go through all of our clothes and start sorting what we no longer wear, need or like. The girls grow out of their clothes so quickly and once they do, I list their clothes for sale online to make some money for new clothes.

I try to keep the girls clothes in good shape by treating stains, washing and drying properly to easily list them for sale once they outgrow them. There’s a huge demand for gently used children’s clothes online and you can get back more than half of what you originally paid after your kid wore them!

So how do you do this?

  1. Shop for quality clothes. When it comes to children’s clothes, you will make more money if you buy from small shops/higher end stores. The downside is that you dish out some more cash for their clothes upfront, but you’ll have to remember you will get a percentage of this back. There’s so many benefits to doing this- your kid gets to wear high quality clothes, you make some money, and you help out others that don’t want to pay full price for that item when you sell it. I’m not saying you won’t make money back if you shop at Old Navy, Target, etc. You may get a few dollars per item, which in my opinion is not worth the hassle of listing and shipping.

Some of the small shops/stores I shop at for the girls:

  • Remie Girl
  • Alice + Ames
  • June & January
  • Rags to Raches
  • Lulu & Roo
  • Childhood Clothing
  • Wunderkin
  • Zara

2. List your items. Once your kid outwears their clothes, it’s time to list their items for sale. I start by separating out what I am going to sell versus donate. Use your better judgement here. Like I mentioned above, I usually donate the Old Navy/Target/Gymboree stuff and focus on selling items I purchased from small shops.

There’s a lot of ways you can go about listing clothing for sale. You can sign up for sites like Poshmark and Kidizen where they take a percentage of a sale, or you can go directly to Facebook groups, which is my personal fav.

Say you have a few Zara sweaters you want to sell. Start my search Zara BST, resale, for sale, etc. in Facebook and join all of the relevant groups. Once you are accepted, make sure you follow the rules and price your items fairly so you can make some quick money.

3.Ship your items. Make sure you have an active PayPal account to invoice for the items you sell. You can also print out your shopping label directly from PayPal and package up your items to be shipped.

4. Make money! That’s it, you’ll have money directly and your PayPal and it’s up to you if you want to splurge or save. Like I mentioned above, I do this every few months and try to post items that are seasonal. For example, I had some spring/summer rompers that I’ve been holding on to that I will post in the spring.

I made over $200 just going through the girls’ closet last week and also put together a ton of stuff to be donated. It’s a great practice to get into and really helps offset costs when your kids outgrow their clothing so fast!
