Why kids should participate in swim lessons year-round

As parents, we’re always on the hunt for the best after-school activities for our kids. Which activities are going to enrich our kids, which activities are going to give them their proper exercise, etc. Well, what about teaching them life-saving skills on top of education, stimulations and exercise?

Sport sign-ups always ramp up in the fall and while the girls are excited about getting back into gymnastics and dance classes, continue swim classes through this season is still incredibly important.

Swim lessons are the only sport that can save your child’s life. They are taught essential life skills that can save them from dangerous situations and prepare them to be strong swimmers- a skill that is soo important for children.

I’ve been sending my girls to Aquatots San Diego for two years and I’ve learned so much about the benefits of swim lessons. Not only are the girls learning life-saving skills to ensure they are strong swimmers in and around the water, there are so many additional benefits to choosing to place your kids in swim lessons year-round.

When we started two years ago, neither of the girls knew how to swim yet. After just a month or two, I had two confident swimmers who were eager to get in the pool and practice. However, it was not always like that. Natalia was just 2 years old and she was terrified to get in the water without me. The Aquatots team worked with her to build her confidence and ensure her safety when listening and following instructions. Who knew that these skills would be so essential in her everyday life too!

What skills can you expect your kids to learn in addition to swimming?

  1. Conquering fears in a careful manner. As parents, we need to help kids push through their fears. By providing loving guidance and support, it can encourage them to break those fears. This can be helpful in school settings, on the playground, etc. as kids develop their personalities and learn how to interact with others.
  2. Consistency is key. This goes with almost everything but especially with swim. Getting Nati back into the water even when she was hesitant about swimming helped her readjust into her class and taught her to never give up. If you keep working at something, you are bound to succeed!
  3. Brain Development. Yup, studies show that swimming can actually improve memory, cognitive function, immune response and mood. These are all essential skills needed in the classroom!
  4. Conquering milestones. There’s nothing that makes a kid feel more accomplished than conquering a new milestone. As kids pass through different swim levels, it will encourage them to stay focused and try harder across all areas.
