Important swim safety tips for kids

Living in San Diego and spending so much time at the beach, it is so important for the girls to know how to swim. Swim is a life-saving skill that every kid should know and your kids are never too young to get started with swim classes.

I enrolled the girls in Aqua-Tots (located in the Otay Ranch Mall in Chula Vista) almost 2 years ago and it’s been amazing to see the progress they have made. When we first started, neither of the girls knew how to swim.

Arianna was 4 (turning 5) and learned how to swim in less than 2 months. I put her in classes 2x a week and by the time that summer came around, I was able to confidently take away her floats and monitor her closely as she swam independently in the pool. Now, she is doing full laps around the pool, knows her breaststroke and could even help her little sister get out of the water if she saw she was in danger.

Natalia started classes right when she turned 2. For 2 year olds, Aqua-Tots offers a mommy and me class to help encourage your child to feel confident in the water, learn life saving skills such as floating on your back, crawling on the wall, and learning how to get out of the pool independently. Fast forward to today, and she is swimming with the 4 and 5 year old kids and is swimming a full lap independently on her own.

If you spend time near a pool or beach often, getting your kids enrolled in swim class could not be more important. Even though both of the girls now know how to swim, I still keep them in classes as a refresher, especially before the summer months come around.

Swim safety tips

  • Teach your kids boundaries. It’s important for your kids to know they can not get near the ocean or pool without you nearby to avoid any accidents
  • Pay full attention. Put the phone, table or book down. When your kids are swimming, you need to pay full attention to them in the water. Be on guard and pay attention to their movements
  • Learn CPR. If you haven’t already, take a CPR class. This is an essential life-saving skill that any parents or care taker should know.
  • Take swim classes. I can’t stress enough how important is to get your kids in swim classes at an early age. There is nothing more important than having your child comfortable in the water and knowing how to swim will bring so much peace of mind to everyone, especially ahead of the summer months.

Drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional, injury-related death among children ages 1-4, and that fact is not limited to the summer calendar. Children are exposed to water on a daily basis, and it takes as little as 2 inches and 20 seconds to snatch a precious life. Continuation of swim lessons builds upon the relationship your children have established with the water, giving them a healthy respect for it and establishing necessary boundaries in and around it. – Aquatots

With the summer months just around the corner, now is the time to think about getting your kids enrolled in swim classes. If your kids don’t know how to swim- you’ll be able to get your kids the basic skills of swimming down within your first few classes at Aqua-Tots. If your kids already know how to swim, consider refreshing their skills so they are strong swimmers this summer!

Aqua-Tots offers a free first class to all families to help determine your swim level and get comfortable with the teachers.
