Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Spring cleaning  my closet has never felt so good and I am so excited to share this post with all of you. This entire process of cleaning out, re-organizing, planning and shopping took a couple of weeks and I could not feel more refreshed. I’m actually pretty embarrassed that I got to this point. How did I accumulate so much stuff over the years? I mean, I know how. I’ve always loved to shop and I used to do so without an agenda. If I liked it, I bought it. However, I would impulse shop and this would often lead to clothes that would just sit in my closet and never get worn. Talk about a huge waste of money.

I’m going into this Spring season with a completely different outlook and I’m doing this for a couple of reasons.

  1. I want to stop buying so much clothes
  2. I want to save money
  3. I want to love what I wear and what I own
  4. I want to build a “capsule” of higher quality clothes that’s versatile and wil last

I know capsule wardrobes are currently a thing and I’m not sure if what I’m doing would really classify as a capsule wardrobe but I’m sort of reinventing the wheel here. I feel what works for each person will be different and as long as you can go into your closet and feel refreshed, I think you are doing it right. Traditional time capsules limit you to a certain number of pieces per season and I did not follow this rule. However, I did put all of my winter, fall and summer clothes away in drawers so I can focus on one season at a time. I also kept a drawer filled with basics– undershirts, tanks, etc. the kind of stuff you need to just grab to throw under an outfit or lounge around the house. So rather than focusing on a number, I focused on a theme .And I’ll get into more of this later on in my post.

Here’s how the whole situation started:

Problem: I realized I was spending too much money shopping and buying stuff I really didn’t love. I began looking into capsule wardrobes (check out Un-Fancy for tips) and realized I wanted to build a high quality capsule wardrobe that will last for seasons to come.

Solution: Got rid of all of the old and purchased new items that I mixed in with items that I already loved.  The goal is to spend less as time goes by and only keep quality items that wash well, fit my body type right and that I feel comfortable wearing. I want to walk into my closet and be able to easily decide what I want to wear that day.

How I got started:

  • I went through my closet and got rid of everything I didn’t like, didn’t wear, was faded, wasn’t my style, etc. (you get the point)
  • I started shopping through my closet, re-discovering items that were buried in the back that I forgot how much I loved.
  • I shopped online. I gave myself a budget and I stuck to it. I did a ton of research online to find good deals and began creating a vision board with styles I liked and how to pair them. I also promised myself that I will not shop at all until the next season. Next season I will do this again. The goal here really is to save money and many items will be carried into the next season (I live in San Diego so the weather is pretty much the same year-round). Since I’m buying quality stuff that I love, it should last longer than my previous items.

For this season, my theme is light neutral tones with some pastel pink and navy. These will be go-to colors for the season and everything can easily be worn together, creating a ton of different outfits. I spent a little over $400 in purchasing some items and pulled several items that I already had in my closet to put this “capsule” together.

Some of the places I shopped at:

  • Madewell
  • Nordstrom
  • The Maldean
  • Abercrombie & Fitch
  • Target
  • Pink Blush

I also been rocking this grey Fawn Designs diaper bag with all of my Spring styles. It’s stylish, fits everything I need and so versatile!

The beauty in all this I was able to really discover my style. The vision board really showed me pieces that I love and helped me decide what to buy. I was also on the lookout for good deals when shopping and found some new shops I really loved. Remember to plan carefully so pieces mix and match easily, shop for deals and have fun!

I’ll be sharing my favorite looks on Instagram over the next couple of months so be sure to follow along! I’ve also linked some of my favorite items below!

I love this idea! I just recently de-cluttered my clothes and my closet and purged a bunch of items I no longer wear. Now I can rediscover items I forgot about and style them!

I love the concept of capsule clothing. I think it happens to me unintentionally. I tend to buy clothes that can go with just about any thing. So loose trousers, nice flannel shirts, maxi skirts, skinny jeans. My colors are either neutrals or pastels like blush and light blues. I stick to grey, brown, black and white. It may seem boring but i love it!

I recently did a purge on my wardrobe too, lots of things were given to charity 🙂 I am also trying to find clothes that will last longer and are more classic than things that are only on trend for a short time! Thanks for sharing x

I think it becomes a habit to shop. Sometimes I get the urge to shop when I’ve been really busy and stressed out. I like to do it to feel better about myself, but it’s important to remind myself that it’s not as important as I make it out to be.

Beautiful! I love this. I’m going to create a spring capsule for myself but I’ll be sewing mine! It’s already spring so it’ll probably be done just in time for summer haha! I’ll be sure to post about it on my blog once finished! I love all your suggestions!

I like your idea of a “capsule”. Of course, as someone who hasn’t bought clothes in YEARS, I guess all of my clothes are capsules. HAHA
