How influencers develop relationships with brands

Getting started with a blog can be pretty overwhelming and it can be really hard to find a straight answer to some of the most commonly asked questions.

I know what it feels like to be eager to work with brands and I definitely did my fair share of research, which often left me even more confused than I was to begin with.

If you’re just getting started with blogging, your most likely going to be doing most of the reaching out and there’s a few ways to do that.

  1. Sign up for influencer marketing platforms

There’s tons of influencer websites out there that allow you to either connect directly with brands through their platform, or serve as the “middle man” for the collaboration.

Some popular influencer platforms include:

  • Clever-Dash
  • Activate
  • Obvious.ly
  • Social Fabric
  • Cohley
  • Aspire IQ
  • Acorn Influence
  • Social Native

Influencer websites are great when you are just starting out, but note that many have a minimum follower requirement in order to get started. Some brands may offer payment, while others will work with you for product exchange. If you are just starting out, I recommend taking on partnerships with as many brands you feel fit with your personal values. These can help develop long-term relationships in the long-run.

2. Reach out to brands directly.

I’ve wrote about pitching and reaching out to brands directly before. I started doing it when I had just about 1,000 followers and worked on some really fun products for product exchange.

So how do you go about finding brand contacts?

  • Check their website first to see if they have a media contact, or collaborations e-mail
  • Check the e-mail associated with their Instagram account
  • Search the brand’s name with “press release” or “for immediate release” to pull up a press release. Press releases usually have a contact name on them when posted online and you can e-mail their PR contact directly

Working with PR agencies:

So many PR agencies are switching their strategies and incorporating influencer marketing as a part of their services. As you continue to work on growing your blog and Instagram, be sure to incorporate relevant hashtags and key terms so these agencies can find you. You’ll find that the bigger you grow, that you won’t be utilizing influencer platforms as much, but rather working with PR companies who will pitch you on the daily.

Establishing long-term relationships with brands:

Now that you know how to get started and where to find brand contacts, it’s important to note that maintaining a strong relationship with these brands is important, especially if you want to work with them again.

Always respond in a timely manner and provide your very best work. You can also check-in with these brand partners from time to time to see if they have any other open campaigns that may be a good fit for you.
