5 ways to focus on you

Motherhood… a crazy wild journey of ups and downs. One minute you are loving your perfect little babies that you created and then five minutes later you wonder why you kids are purposely working to drive you absolutely crazy! I mean, at least that’s how I feel.

Time at home has families spending a lot more time together and it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed or frustrated with every day situations. I promise if you are feeling this way you are in no way alone.

As moms, we do A LOT. We are constantly thinking about everyone’s wants and needs, caring for our homes, our children, and everything else in between. Yes, it’s chaotic but it’s also one of the beautiful things about motherhood. It’s a beautiful chaos.

If the frame of a house falls apart, everything else falls down with us. That’s us- we are that frame. We hold all together on a day to day basis and don’t even notice that we are doing it more than half of the time- it comes so natural that it becomes all that we know.

This year I got hit with anxiety and I came to the realization that I really needed to take care of myself. Focus less on the things that make me feel overwhelmed and a bit more on myself.

Here are 5 ways to practice self-care guilt free

1. Get a babysitter

Yup- get a babysitter to do WHAVER you want to do. If you want to spend some time shopping- do it. If you prefer just hang out at home and watch TB interruption free, then make it happen. You don’t need to have an excuse or a planned outing to ask for someone to watch the kids, you can simply just do it for some alone time.

We are so fortunate to have family nearby and once a week I send the girls with my in-laws so Danny and I can have a quite evening. It gives us almost a full day to ourselves and it really helps to recharge. Our “day off” is Wednesday and has worked so well for us as it gives us a much needed break mid-week.

2. Take a bath

One of my favorite ways to relax after a long day is with a nice hot bath. Lock the door, plop in a bath bomb, put on some relaxing music and grab a glass of wine. It’s amazing what just an hour of relaxation can do for yourself.

3. Exercise

I used to have a love/hate relationship with working out until this year. I wanted to work out because I wanted to be in shape but I did not enjoy doing the work. This year, I began to enjoy working out. I stopped making it seem like a chore and realized this was a way for me to enjoy time to myself and challenge my goals. Running can be very therapeutic and there’s so many excercises that you can do at home.

If you don’t make it feel like a chore and take enjoyment in your journey, you will realize that exercising does wonders for your mental health.

4. Get a new hobby

I feel like 2020 is going to become a year of new hobbies for so many people. Hobbies are such a fun way to get an escape from daily stress. For a few months, I went crazy making bead bracelets. Now, my newest hobby has been working on the van. Seeing the progress of something from start to finish is so satisfying and has been so fun to see unfold. The best part? You are doing it because it’s something that you want to do- not a chore or task give it to you.

SO many people are diving into home projects right now and that’s another fun way to keep your mind busy. Anything from painting, to reading, to picking up a craft is a great way to focus on yourself and do something for you.

5. Write in a journal

I’ve never been the type of person to write in a journal but a few months ago I purchased a passion planner which has lots of journaling pages in it and one day I decided to just write down my thoughts. Each month, I evaluate the progress I’ve made on a personal and professional side and also make goals for the following month. It’s such a nice way to hold yourself accountable and remind yourself of what your hopes and dreams are as well as look back and reflect on how those change over time.
